Dollar Spot Expression

The effects of nitrogen on dollar spot expression have been well documented. Nitrogen has been used as a tool to “grow out” lesions by improving the plants tolerance to infection. To further reduce the effect of dollar spot, we need to review the plants ability to utilize its natural defense mechanisms. This process is known as plant resistance.

Field trials were set up at golf courses across Ontario and Quebec and were based on the clinical studies at the Guelph Turfgrass Institute and Laval research station. A quadrate was used to randomly count both old and new lesions over a three month period beginning in August. A supplemental foliar fertilizer was applied (Protocal™) bi-weekly. The golf course trials consisted of 12 fairways with each program being applied to 3 fairways.

Anthracnose

In 2008, the focus of our research was to evaluate the synergy between lower rates of fungicides and balanced fertility.

The protocol for the 2007 anthracnose trials included Enfoss™ technical phosphite.

In 2003, The effect of Nitrogen on the development of Anthracnose was studied at Rutgers University.

Quality Assurance

Several PSI fertilizers were applied August 2, 2004 to TifEagle bermudagrass at a rate of 0.5 lb N/1000 sq. ft. Fertilizers were 7-2-5 100% water-insoluble N (WIN), 15-2-15 60% WIN, and 8-16-16 45% WIN. Also included were a no fertilizer treatment and an ammonium sulfate based 16-4-8 0% WIN treatments.
